Hummus is probably vegans’ favourite food. I am not vegan, but I bought once hummus from the supermarket and it was a huge disappointment. So I decided to give it a try again, but I said that it’s time to make it by myself. This hummus recipe is super easy, not to mention healthy, because it has lots of proteins and can successfully substitute meat.
Hummus is an Egyptian based recipe and its main ingredients are smashed chickpeas and tahini.
Tahini is a paste make from sesame seeds and oil (you can find it in any supermarket at the international food sector).
Homemade Hummus Recipe
Servings: 4 | Prep. Time: 10 mins | Waiting Time: n/a | Cook Time: 30 mins | Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients:
- 350 grams chickpeas
- 4 tbsp tahini;
- 2 tbsp of lemon juice;
- 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil;
- 1 tsp of garlic powder;
- 1 tsp of turmeric;
- a pinch of salt;
- 1/2 tsp of paprika (optional, but delicious).
Method:
1. Let the chickpeas soak for a few hours and then boil them for about 30 minutes or until they’re soft. Keep the stock for later.
2. Add the chickpeas in a food processor and blend until they form a smooth paste. Add some of the stock water to help the blending.
3. Add the tahini paste and spices and give it a good mix again.
4. Season with salt, pepper, and olive oil to taste.
Here are some things you need to know about dried chickpeas:
- let them soak overnight, or at least for 8 hours before you boil it;
- let them boil for at least 40 mins; check them to see if they are soft and eatable; 😀
- chickpeas have a thin skin around them – like beans – and you have to peel them (one by one) if you want a smooth, creamy hummus.
After the chickpeas is boiled, you’ll have to let them cool down a little and after that peel all of them. It will take some time, but it will so much worth it. Don’t let them dry, peel them while they’re still a little wet; it will be easier to peel them this way.
Don’t throw the stock where the chickpeas boiled! You’ll need it when blending the chickpeas.
To blend them easily, add some of the water where the chickpeas have boiled; it won’t change its taste at all.
After you blended all the chickpeas, add the tablespoons of tahini and mix well. I am not a huge fan of tahini, but if you are really crazy about it you can add more that a couple of tablespoons. This is the beauty of homemade food: you’re in total control of how much ingredients go in the recipe.
I love the subtle flavour of the turmeric, not to mention the colour.
Hummus is a great dip-in, it’s super healthy and an amazing substitute for meat, in case you’re trying to avoid eating meat.
I am so happy that I managed to make my own hummus recipe; it’s definitely way better that the one from the supermarket, it’s easy to make and DELICIOUS!
I really hope that you enjoy this recipe and let me know if you gave it a try! Also if you liked this recipe please share it with your friends as well!

Hope you’ll like it, Adriana!
Omg YUMMY!! My own homemade hummus is the only hummus my hubs will eat, so I’ll have to make yours next and see how it fares!
Oh, please let me know what he thought of it, Erica!
Homemade hummus is the best! If you put it on some toasted ciabatta along with caramelized onions, it’s the BEST snack 🙂
Oh, never tried it with caramelised onions. Good tip, thanks, Victoria! <3
this looks delicious! yum!
I love how simple the recipe is because that makes me more likely to make it! It looks delicious.
YUM! This looks amazing, I think the hard part for me would be the waiting and peeling! ha! I’ve never made my own!
Oh, yeah… the peeling can be quite annoying, but it’s worth it.
Hi, Angela!
You use the leftover water to blend the chickpeas, because they will be too thick to blend (or eat) otherwise. You can also use regular water, but it might change the flavour of your hummus. So the leftover water is the key for a creamy, smooth and delicious hummus.
If you try it with regular water, let me know how it turned out!
so what do you do with the leftover water??
I love humus but I have never made it myself!! One day I will!
Holy YUM. This looks like the hummus I had in Israel. Definitely making this ASAP.
